UNIV*6800 Universtiy Teaching: Theory and Practice (UTTP)
Course Description:
Participants will critically examine and reflect upon teaching and learning issues
in higher education, and begin to develop and practice teaching skills and strategies
that are pedagogically sound. Learning Outcomes:
The overarching goal of UTTP is the development of a lifelong interest in teaching
and learning. More specifically, having successfully completed this course you
will:
- have developed reflective practices around teaching issues.
- feel more knowledgeable about and confident in your teaching (e.g., practice
teaching, peer evaluation, skill development).
- have articulated a teaching statement identifying your emerging philosophy and
approach to teaching.
- be able to analyze and critique a teaching situation applying educational theory
and sound pedagogy (e.g., setting objectives, selecting assessment methods, choosing
teaching and learning strategies) to its design and delivery.
- be able to identify and account for in your instructional planning various
factors which impact teaching and learning effectiveness (e.g., learning and teaching
preferences, ethical principles in teaching, student diversity)
Topics include:
- Philosophies Underlying Teaching
- Learning and Teaching Styles and Preferences
- Using Learning Objectives
- Interactive Approaches to Teaching
- Assessing Learning
Format:
University Teaching: Theory and Practice (Pass/Fail for .5 credits) meets 12 times
over the fall semester and attracts students from across campus. UTTP may or may not be
taken for credit.
